Points Rummy is a popular variation of the card game Rummy, played with a standard deck of 52 cards. In this version of the game, players aim to be the first to meld all of their cards into sets and runs, with Rummy points being assigned to each card based on its rank. The game is played with 2-6 players, and the goal is to have the lowest Rummy score at the end of the game.
How to play Points Rummy?
To start a game of Points Rummy, the dealer shuffles the deck and deals a certain number of cards to each player, depending on the number of players. The remaining cards are placed face down in the centre of the table to form the draw pile. The top card of the draw pile is then turned over to start the discard pile.
On their turn, a player has the option to either draw a card from the draw pile or take the top card from the discard pile. They can then choose to meld any sets or runs in their hand, or they can add cards to sets or runs that have already been melded by other players. A set consists of three or four cards of the same rank, but different suits. A run consists of three or more cards of the same suit in consecutive order.
Once a player has melded all of their cards, they can declare "rummy" and end the game. The other players then add up the value of the cards in their hand, with points being assigned as follows:
- Face cards (jack, queen, king) and 10s are worth 10 points each
- Aces are worth 15 points each
- All other cards are worth their face value (e.g. a 9 of hearts is worth 9 points)
The player with the lowest score wins the game. In the event of a tie, the tied players compare the value of the highest-scoring card in their hand. The player with the lowest value card wins the tie.
There are also a few variations of Points Rummy that can be played. One such variation is "First to 100," in which players aim to be the first to reach a score of 100 points or more. In this version, players can choose to continue playing after they have reached 100 points, with the goal being to minimize their score as much as possible.
Another variation is "Dealer's Choice," in which the dealer gets to choose the specific Points Rummy rules for the game. For example, they may choose to play with jokers, which can be used as wild cards and can be melded with any other cards to form sets or runs.
